This nationally accredited level 2 programme explores work with children and young people in informal settings
Completely re-written and updated in 2015 this programme is suitable for people working with children and young people in informal settings wishing to develop their existing knowledge and understanding. Previous participants have included senior members, volunteers, part-time staff and year 11 students involved in extended schools programmes. Students will complete the course with a greater understanding of the theory, practical skills and knowledge required to work with children and young people within a youth and community context.
What is the Certificate worth?
The Certificate is a Level 2 qualification, it is accredited by the Awarding Body Consortium (ABC) and allows for the progression to our Level three Diploma programme.
How does it work?
The course runs over 20 sessions lasting approximately three hours per session. Uniquely, the course can be run in-house or be delivered by the YMCA George Williams College at your organisation. Both options require a minimum of eight participants to be registered.
What is the programme content?
Module 1: Informal Education; personal and professional values in youth work; roles and responsibilities of a worker; community profiling and meeting young people’s needs.
Module 2: Communication; empowerment; leadership; safeguarding young people; reflective practice.
Module 3: Dealing with conflict; planning and delivering youth work; participation; teamwork; monitoring and evaluating work.
What are the entry requirements?
Participants need to be sixteen and over, DBS (CRB) checked and have a placement/project where they are working 3 – 5 hours per week. They should be planning and delivering youth work with children and young people, this is an essential component as the course tutor will encourage participants to reflect on their practice. In addition, participants will need to build a portfolio of evidence and attend at least four supervision sessions with a nominated supervisor.
