advanced professional certificate in working with homeless peoplePractitioners and managers are becoming increasingly
aware of the need for a strategy for the training and development of staff.
There is also a need under Supporting People to be able to show that an
organisation has a strategy for the continuing professional development of
its staff. Oddly while there are good courses in housing and supported
housing, there is, to date, no dedicated course for practitioners
specifically working with homeless people. As such the emphasis on this
course is less on housing management and more on the client work with
homeless people to help them improve their lives. While academic qualifications are not the only
solution to the training needs of workers, for people who have studied
previously at degree level they can be a logical next step. There is also
the advantage that to be professionally qualified at degree level study
starts to give us parity with other care professionals such as social
workers, youth workers and Connexions. The new publication: workers in the homeless sectorThe question of who works in the field of homelessness, their backgrounds, experience, cultures and identities, has not been the subject of much concern in the literature. This report, by Mike Seal, looks at the impact of worker demographics, their views on the support and training they receive, and their views of other agencies. Download: A study of the demographic makeup, working conditions and attitudes of workers in the homeless sector accessing short courses. Also available as a hard copy for £5.
